In one of ym writing assignments I and the client came to a agreement to disagree about writing focused on the page audience or the the seo.
Any thoughts?

yes well how can I argue with that?
But what i meant was, when writing content should the focus be getting content up for visitors or content that will bind the seo results and bring visitors?

what? That guy makes no sense.
But the answer is both. the content should serve both needs.

Yeah, it should be both.
Here's what happens if you only concentrate on SEO content.
Good seo content + poor site content = visitors that would leave quickly
Bad + seo content + good site content = no visitors
Good SEO content + Good site content = Many visitors that will stay.

Savvyeyty has laid it out pretty good. Ideally, it should be both - your content needs to be attractive for visitors as well as SEO. Visitors should not even notice all those things like keyword density, etc. They need to see interesting, quality content.
